Clear and Calming

An eye clinic that distinguishes itself through thoughtful design across all functional areas.

The Macula Centre at Dardenne Eye Clinic has established its new home in the heart of Bad Godesberg. Since the practice encompasses both diagnostic examinations and surgical procedures, the 500 m² space was thoughtfully divided into distinct functional zones. The Cologne-based firm atmosphäre was tasked with the interior design and took a collaborative approach—working closely with staff to understand workflows and operational needs. The design strategy centers on natural materials, soft colour palettes, and carefully placed dark accents to foster a calm, welcoming environment.

The spacious reception and practice area spans 220 m² on the south-east side of the building, fronting the pedestrian zone. A striking dark wood reception desk anchors the space—both as a welcoming point for visitors and a functional hub providing staff with clear sightlines throughout. The reception seamlessly transitions into the waiting area, separated only by acoustic glass paneling. Large windows flood the space with natural light, while an eye-catching wooden slat detail with integrated black light strips adds visual interest. Strategic seating alcoves positioned before examination rooms optimize patient flow and maintain clear pathways. The sanitary facilities are colour-coded as a distinct zone, creating a visual rhythm: warm wood tones in the patient area, earthy hues in sanitation, and black accents at reception. The separate 140 m² staff zone functions as the operational heart—housing the kitchenette, lounge, offices, and administrative spaces. Here, warm earth-toned furnishings paired with subtle black lighting fixtures establish a quiet, restorative atmosphere. The interior operating theatre receives daylight through skylights and is distinctly articulated from other zones to meet stringent hygiene standards—combining the clinic's signature green with light grey flooring and selective wood detailing. Separate circulation routes for staff and patients ensure hygiene protocols are maintained without overlap. The entire space is fully accessible, with technical systems—ventilation, clean-room standards, and hygiene protocols—meeting the highest standards of contemporary medical practice.
