Refined lighting design for the music experience

The new Casals Forum at Kronberg Academy unites modern architecture, masterful acoustics, and a refined lighting concept into a harmonious whole. Designed by Berlin-based Staab Architekten, the building ensemble features a sculptural, transparent pavilion housing the forum itself. Licht Kunst Licht's lighting design delivers flexible scenarios and varied atmospheres that enhance the complete musical experience. Every lighting solution—thoughtfully conceived, adaptable, and seamlessly integrated—serves the architecture and its purpose. Far more than merely functional, these installations shape spatial perception and profoundly influence the room's emotional character.

The complex also includes a dedicated study centre adjoining the chamber music hall, supporting year-round programming at the academy. The lighting design ties both spaces together seamlessly. At the entrance, subtle downlights integrated into the overhanging roof of the chamber music hall cast a gentle wash of light across the floor, warmly welcoming visitors into the building. In the upper foyer, warm white illumination highlights the refined wood surfaces and pale stone floors. Specialized lighting scenarios are also available for exhibition presentations.

The concert hall forms the heart of the Casals Forum. A continuous narrow LED strip traces the curved glass wall encasing the chamber music hall, softly illuminating the curtain during performances—creating atmosphere while signalling to guests how the space is being used. General illumination throughout the 14-metre-high hall comes from 90 custom cylindrical pendant fixtures arranged to echo the ceiling's design. The upper half can be bathed in diffuse light, while each pendant also features a downlight component for direct illumination at floor level. Working closely with architects and end users, the lighting designers developed multiple scenes enabling a gradual transition from bright daylight to intimate concert conditions—even including a dedicated lighting cue for applause. Discreet recessed fixtures embedded in the stepped seating ensure safe navigation and visibility during dimmed concert lighting.
