Learning and Play, Reimagined
Modular Design Meets Early Education: A New Children's Centre Takes Shape in Fellbach
Flooded with natural light, dotted with covered play terraces, and anchored by a vibrant "marketplace" complete with a children's restaurant—the new Konzept-e children's centre in Fellbach checks every box. Beyond housing 120 children from the Kappelbande daycare, it also welcomes approximately 75 students from the Free Dual Academy for Education. Built by modular construction pioneer Alho in just 18 weeks, the structure stands as a testament to efficient, contemporary design. The crisp white façade is punctuated by graceful wooden balconies featuring finely detailed, grey-painted slats. This layered approach creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow across the building's exterior.
Spread across three storeys and 2,400 m² of space, this new centre provides everything needed for contemporary early childhood education. Every functional area opens onto surrounding terraces through generous windows, ensuring abundant daylight throughout. The protective parapets keep the covered walkways safe and serve as emergency escape routes—yet children readily claim them as outdoor activity zones. The marketplace gathering spaces on each floor are equally cherished: informal meeting points where children and educators come together to play, collaborate, and explore. On the ground level, the marketplace doubles as a dining area for the youngest learners. Throughout the project, the operators prioritized natural materials—wood-aluminium window frames, timber interior doors, and linoleum flooring. A rooftop photovoltaic array and air-water heat pump system complete the sustainability strategy.
