Making a Statement Through Design

The courtyard of this conference centre proves that thoughtful design requires minimal resources—but delivers maximum impact

AE7 is an international, multidisciplinary design firm with an office in Düsseldorf. Led by landscape architect Florian Klein and his colleague David Podschadli, the team designed and realized the Bochum Knappschaft Bahn See conference center—a striking retreat set within an inviting natural landscape, conveniently located just minutes away. Positioned on elevated terrain, the facility combines a historic structure with a contemporary new wing. From the panoramic terrace, views open to sweeping countryside and a gently descending wildflower meadow, crafted with both harmony and ecological sensitivity.

This entrance successfully achieves substantial impact through restrained means. The inner courtyard, nestled between the historic building and new construction, demanded considerably greater design sophistication. Serving as both gathering space and quiet retreat, the courtyard is expansive, light-filled, and openly conceived—harmoniously bridging the arched windows of the original structure with the seminar rooms' glass façade beyond. The design thoughtfully echoes the buildings' existing materials and colour palette: pale L-shaped concrete blocks define the courtyard's perimeter, while integrated benches oriented toward the heritage building encourage lingering. Beyond its welcoming character, this approach offers a practical advantage: the light palette keeps the courtyard cooler during summer months. Indigenous plantings introduce colour accents while reinforcing the courtyard's linear composition. Subtle, low-profile light fixtures gently illuminate the space during twilight and evening hours, creating an inviting ambiance.
