Back to the Office – with Purpose
How a dated blue and brown office space was transformed into a contemporary workplace
During the pandemic, employees nationwide transitioned to remote work, conducting most communication with colleagues and managers through virtual meetings. Research has since confirmed what many suspected: direct, in-person collaboration strengthens both creativity and well-being. Eager to bring their team back together, the board of Wilhelmsburg's Bauverein Reiherstieg cooperative turned to Renner Hainke Wirth Zirn Architects with a clear goal—modernizing their administrative headquarters. The architects' initial assessment suggested a complete rebuild, but the substantial budget required made that unfeasible. Instead, the team and cooperative pursued a more pragmatic path: refreshing the dated, blue-and-brown office environment into a contemporary workspace without major structural changes and at a fraction of the cost.
The result demonstrates a powerful principle: thoughtful use of color, quality lighting, and natural materials can transform even constrained spaces into inviting environments. Oversize photographs by Stephanie Brinkkötter—featuring locally iconic motifs of containers, ships, and the Rethespeicher warehouses rendered in her distinctive wiping technique—now anchor the cooperative's identity throughout the rooms, resonating with residents and staff alike. Integrated behind these gallery-scale images are sound-absorbing panels that enhance acoustic comfort while celebrating local character, particularly in the entrance and meeting areas. The design process was notably inclusive: from dishware and calendars to artwork and wall graphics, the RHWZ team engaged thoroughly with the space's future occupants, ensuring their individual personalities would be reflected in the final environment. Strategic interventions—selective dark accents, accent colors from the Icons palette, strategic mirror placement, and thoughtful curation of elements—created a cohesive narrative throughout. This collaborative approach with the client and contractors yielded an impressive result: a condensed construction timeline without compromise on quality. The administrative building has been reborn as a vibrant gathering place where employees and tenants genuinely want to spend their time.
