Transformed
Extensive renovations transform a 1960s villa into a contemporary retreat
Perched on a beautiful hillside with sweeping views stands a house that is far more than just a dwelling. The owner calls his reimagined residence "my castle" – a space where tradition meets modernity, and privacy balances with openness. The architects behind this transformation, Fachwerk4 | Architekten BDA, honoured the home's existing qualities, which had undergone extensive modernization in the 1990s, while reimagining them for the 21st century. The defining feature of the new exterior is a striking interplay of light and shadow. The compact form was carefully refined: the imposing base level now wears a dark metal façade that anchors the composition visually, while the crisp white plaster floors above seem to float weightlessly above it. This deliberate contrast lends the building its castle-like presence – commanding yet refined.
From the beginning, the client was clear about his vision: this home should be a stage for life's finest moments. As a passionate art collector, he sought spaces worthy of his carefully curated treasures. The architects responded with openness and purposeful sightlines throughout. Upon entry, the interior unfolds eastward and westward, drawing light deep into the home and creating an expansive atmosphere. Despite the building's originally modest ceiling heights, the team employed sophisticated design interventions – removing old drop ceilings and installing specialized flooring – to reclaim precious vertical space. But they went further, drawing on perceptual psychology to amplify the sense of room. Large-format, matte black porcelain tiles ground the floors while their stark contrast with smooth white walls optically elevates the space – an elegant solution to the inherited constraints. The lighting design plays an equally important role: indirect cove lighting lifts the eye upward, while strategically placed accents and diffused illumination choreograph movement through the space. Sophisticated lighting controls shift the mood throughout the day and evening, from intimate to celebratory.
Thoughtfully placed wood – in custom cabinetry and wall treatments – introduces warmth into the otherwise austere composition. Colour remains deliberately restrained; select design icons punctuate the space with quiet intention. A concealed climate and audio system operates invisibly, providing complete comfort without compromising the refined aesthetic. The living spaces, individually appointed bedroom suites with integrated wellness baths, and a sheltered terrace housing sauna, pool, and spa form a cohesive sanctuary – a private refuge within the bustling residential neighbourhood. A castle for the modern age.
