The Cube of Possibilities

A striking new headquarters in Media Harbour—where transparency and clarity define the design

Sleek and refined, the glossy black cube on Kaistraße commands attention through understated elegance, rising confidently within the vibrant landscape of Düsseldorf's Media Harbour. The six-storey headquarters for project developer Centrum captivates with its dramatic glass façade—a surface that engages its surroundings and celebrates the waterfront setting. Designed and executed by Düsseldorf-based Structurelab Architects, this office building with its generous conference areas embodies Oscar Wilde's timeless insight: "The average gives the world its substance, the extraordinary its value."

Sharp-edged and impeccably finished, the cube replaces a portion of the adjacent warehouse, presenting two distinctly different faces. Along Kaistraße, horizontal metal slats establish a rhythmic visual language, while the harbour-facing façade opens dramatically with expansive glass panels. These black, semi-transparent surfaces function as mirrors—reflecting the harbour's changing light and dynamic silhouettes as day and season shift. The solid, plinth-like ground floor anchors the composition with striking contrast. Above, each office level showcases clarity through open-plan layouts, with central support functions and open secretariat spaces anchoring the middle zones. Transparent interior partitions frame generous views across floors and toward the water, while custom cabinetry doubles as structural elements, creating the illusion of column-free spans. Slender outdoor loggias stretch across the building's full width, inviting employees to step outside on every level. Inside, raw concrete surfaces engage in dramatic dialogue with smooth glass and refined metal details—where industrial rawness meets polished perfection. Every element, from façade to furnishings, aligns precisely with the building's geometric order. At the summit sits a planted roof lounge—complete with outdoor kitchen and bar—offering an inspiring retreat with panoramic views across Media Harbour and the Rhine promenade.
