A Spectacular Showcase
Holiday home ensemble that caters to motorsport enthusiasts and those seeking peaceful retreat alike
Nestled in the Vordereifel region, the Racers Lodge represents an architectural vision that merges motorsport passion with the desire for seclusion and natural immersion. Two solid-construction holiday homes sit staggered across a sloping plot, their bold forms commanding attention against the conventional architecture of the surrounding landscape. The interior reveals the project's true signature: a dramatically showcased double garage with hydraulic lift, separated from the home's architectural heart—the living area—by nothing more than a transparent glass wall.
The design process unfolded through close collaboration with the clients, whose deep passion for design and engineering fundamentally shaped the architectural vision. Bungarten Architects set out to create more than a rental property—they envisioned a place that delivers a memorable experience: a sanctuary for both relaxation and connection, where motorsport enthusiasm coexists with peaceful retreat. What began as a two-unit holiday home evolved through the design dialogue into two distinct houses, each with its own character and tailored features. The sloping terrain presented a defining challenge, which the architects elegantly resolved through a cascading building structure and thoughtful site planning. The two lodges—"Grand Prix" and "Nordschleife"—were conceived as staggered semi-detached units that work with the slope's natural topography rather than against it. The steel roof structure employs strong vertical lines that echo subtly in the side-hinged double garage doors. Exterior walls combine insulated masonry blocks with reinforced concrete finished in composite thermal insulation systems (ETICS).
A continuous wraparound balcony with glass railings introduces the open ground floor. This level brings together the living area, an integrated kitchen, and the project's crowning achievement: a bold double garage with hydraulic lift, visually connected to the living space through a glass partition. This audacious fusion of living and garage spaces speaks directly to motorsport devotees while establishing a distinctive spatial identity. Interior surfaces—a mix of exposed concrete and refined plaster—work together to create visual harmony. Every material choice reinforces the design's clarity: contemporary, restrained, yet commanding. The open framework extending to the roof creates an expansive loft-like ambiance. Expansive panoramic windows frame stunning views across the Eifel landscape and flood the interiors with light and space. Below, a custom steel staircase descends to private bedrooms and support spaces, while level access to rear terraces offers an intimate escape into nature.
Technical systems have been woven seamlessly into the architecture, underpinning an energy-conscious, sustainable approach. The building achieves top-tier energy performance through geothermal heating and expansive thermally insulated glazing. The Racers Lodge transcends the category of holiday home—it's a place where motion and stillness, technology and landscape, experience and refuge converge. Through rigorous design thinking, meticulous execution, and genuine partnership among architects, engineers, and clients, an extraordinary space has emerged—one that captivates and inspires all who enter.
