Sensory Presence

A townhouse where architecture and interior design merge seamlessly

Bathed in light and open in every sense, this interior—created by Düsseldorf-based design studio raumkontor—welcomes you in. The result is an inviting space that's both architecturally and emotionally cohesive, a generous living environment that also serves as a private sanctuary. Each artwork collected by the owner over the years carries its own narrative, anchored in personal memory, and together they animate the rooms. Restrained yet nuanced in execution, the design speaks through subtlety rather than statement.

From the street, the building's facade reads quietly, almost understated. Inside, however, a soaring two-story entrance hall commands attention, seamlessly connecting both levels. A sculptural dark wood cube—clad in luxurious Makassar ebony—anchors the ground floor. Within it sits a bar, storage for dishware, a cloakroom, and a guest restroom. This smart, integrated solution creates generous, clearly defined zones throughout the home. A bold floating staircase with wall-mounted steps ascends gracefully to the private quarters above, completing the dramatic entry sequence. Natural light amplifies the welcoming atmosphere; expansive windows ensure the rooms pulse with daylight's rhythm. As sunlight flows through open-plan spaces, it is continuously filtered and refracted, transforming the rooms subtly throughout the day. This interplay creates layered lighting moments that reveal the depth and texture of every material surface. The result is a distinctive sensory richness. Here, restrained materiality and carefully crafted details merge interior and architecture into a singular expression of quiet sophistication.
