Simply Hyggelig
Scandic München Macherei: Where Swedish Hospitality Meets Sustainable Design
Since autumn 2022, the Scandic München Macherei has anchored itself in the Laim district with distinctly Swedish charm – a perfect fit for this dynamic neighbourhood where creative spaces thrive and work seamlessly blends with art and culture. Designed by New York-based architectural firm HWKN, the hotel commands attention from every angle. Its staggered, stacked floors wrapped in clinker brick create the striking illusion of movement – a visual nod to the neighbourhood's industrial heritage as a former brick manufacturing hub.
Stockholm-based design firm Koncept has crafted an interior that echoes this narrative through warm, earthy rust-reds and soft beiges. The expansive ground floor – with its soaring ceilings and exposed concrete walls – dissolves the boundaries between spaces. The "Living Room" seamlessly unites reception, bar, restaurant, and co-working areas into one welcoming hub. Casual seating clusters nestle among open bookshelves lined with books and games, creating an inviting hyggelig atmosphere that welcomes both guests and locals alike, whether for focused work, a business lunch, or evening cocktails. The 234 guest rooms follow the same Scandi aesthetic: refined palettes of rust-red and beige, warm wood floors, minimalist Scandinavian designer pieces, and bathrooms finished in natural stone. Kitchenette rooms feature clever fold-down design kitchens, while select upper-floor units gift occupants with Alpine views. Every room balances curated artwork and statement lighting with practical essentials – right down to irons and boards.Sustainability is woven into every fibre of this hotel – a Scandic commitment since 1993. The property channels biogas from its own food waste system back into the grid, sources all textiles and fabrics through the Green Button certification, and minimizes single-use plastics wherever possible. The on-site Zieglerei restaurant champions fresh, seasonal cooking with a Bavarian-Scandinavian accent, showcasing local producers while steadfastly avoiding scampi and palm oil.For the business-minded, the hotel delivers dedicated meeting studios – two intimate, Scandinavian-styled spaces seating ten and twelve respectively – ideal for workshops and collaborative meetings. The Living Room itself provides ample room for business gatherings with an ease that pairs perfectly with evening events and overnight stays.
