A New Order
The shop has been reimagined with a clear two-part layout: souvenirs in the front, the 4711 collection in the back.
4711 is as iconic to Cologne as 1. FC Köln itself. The bustling 4711 shop at the cathedral needed a complete overhaul and restructuring. Tasked with this challenge, plus design projekt created a new two-part layout: souvenirs occupy the front, while the 4711 collection commands the rear. Each zone features a central sales display with a subtle curve that guides—rather than impedes—visitor flow, its design echoed in custom-painted lighting. "My job was essentially about creating clarity," explains Stefan Schreiber, owner of the Cologne design studio.
Success came through thoughtful separation and restrained fixtures that, despite the abundance of souvenirs, create a breathing space that never overwhelms. The real challenge lay in reconfiguring staff workflows—the registers are no longer centrally positioned. The lighting system is equally transformative. Where ceiling fixtures once lit everything uniformly, the shop now uses Vitra-Ladenbau's modular system: adjustable shelving with integrated lighting that illuminates products precisely and efficiently. "It's effective, energy-conscious LED lighting that's virtually invisible," Schreiber notes, convinced by the solution.
