A Paradise Reclaimed

Ordinary lawns transformed into a vibrant family garden

As part of a complete home renovation, the expansive garden underwent an equally thorough transformation. The owners envisioned a garden that would be both aesthetically refined and functionally modern—one that had clearly seen better days. They wanted a swimming pool and distinct recreational zones tailored to the needs of their entire family. When Jochen Gempp Gartendesign began their work, they inherited a garden dominated by oversized lawns and neglected plantings. A single terrace existed, but it offered neither spatial character nor any genuine sense of place to linger. Despite its considerable size, the garden felt empty and purposeless. From the start, the design vision was clear: breathe vitality back into this space and create an inviting family sanctuary.

Large gardens risk feeling monotonous without thoughtful design—which is why this space was carefully divided into distinct zones, each with its own character. The centerpiece is a striking infinity pool and adjoining pool house, positioned to take full advantage of the sloping terrain and create a dramatic focal point. Strategic terrace placement frames carefully considered sight lines throughout the garden. Each seating area features its own curated furnishings: sun loungers for quiet afternoons, a generous poolside lounge for gatherings, and a daybed for moments of repose. Layered plantings and sculptural hedges provide screening without sacrificing the open, flowing layout. A covered kitchen area extends the garden's usability year-round, anchored by an architecturally striking dining table—a conversation piece in itself. Deep within the garden, beneath the light shade of mature plane trees, another seating nook emerges, cradled by abundantly flowering roses, perennials, and ornamental grasses. Throughout, travertine—specially finished for refined elegance—forms the terraces, steps, pathways, walls, and borders, creating a sense of generous proportion. Complementary gravel grounds secondary areas. Inside the pool, custom ceramic tiles in an unexpected color palette add another layer of sophistication. Together, the distinctive table, vibrant furnishings, and refined materials create a garden that feels truly one-of-a-kind.

Strategic lighting transforms the garden after dark: the pool and select topiary glow softly, garden sculptures receive subtle accent lighting, and the peripheral plantings are delicately illuminated. Statement outdoor fixtures highlight key terraces and gathering spots. A specialized team, working under Gempp Gartendesign's direction, maintains this reclaimed paradise through regular seasonal care.
