Dustin Jessen creates furniture and accessories from recycled materials
Dustin Jessen is a product designer and design theorist fascinated by the convergence of design and research. A native of Hattingen, he earned his degree from the Royal College of Art in London in 2014, following studies in industrial design at Folkwang University of the Arts (FUdK) in Essen and the Design Academy Eindhoven. Since then, he has worked as a freelance designer in Essen and as a research fellow in the Industrial Design programme at FUdK. He also co-founded Das Rezyklat with Steffen Hartwig—a studio and workshop dedicated to designing and producing goods from recycled materials, particularly plastic.
The HKN coat hook embodies minimalist design, embracing the principle of eliminating the unnecessary—evident even in its name, a vowelless version of the word "hook." This versatile accessory brings order to hallways, offices, and bedrooms while accommodating jackets, scarves, and bags. Crafted entirely from recycled plastic waste, it comes in three distinctive color blends: More than Black, Colorful Grey, and Almost White. The Laura's Hook series features round wall hooks equally committed to sustainability—100 percent recycled plastic with a 70-millimeter diameter. Use them individually or combine them as a group. For his Piatta chair, Jessen combines plywood, solid wood, and recycled PET felt into a design suited for both professional and residential settings. The chair ships flat and assembles on-site, making it as practical as it is purposeful.
