Elegant Minimalism

A bungalow distinguished by its flowing spatial organization

Recognizing the potential of a place and distilling it to its essence—so that the final design fits like a bespoke suit—is the core philosophy of Krefeld-based firm Stapelmann Architektur. For an existing bungalow nestled in nature, architect Jan Stapelmann reimagined the spatial layout with bold innovation, delivering a minimalist solution executed with exceptional craftsmanship.

The single-storey living space transformed into a flowing layout through deliberate repositioning and opening of existing wall elements. Rather than isolated rooms, a continuous space emerged with carefully composed sightlines. The design introduces new zoning between public and private zones: a partition wall with concealed sliding door quietly separates living and dining areas from the more intimate bedroom, dressing, and master bath spaces. The hipped roof's ceiling, reaching five metres high, once felt heavy with its dark finish. Light-coloured cladding now opens it up, while integrated wall washers graze the slatted partition walls, making the roof slopes appear like a billowing canopy floating above. Every spatial element—partitions, doors, lintels, and built-ins—aligns at a consistent datum line, creating visual calm throughout. The design language is deliberately clear and restrained: slatted walls with shadow joints weave through all zones like a unifying thread, incorporating concealed wardrobes, open dressing areas, and integrated master beds.

The floating sideboards, benches, and five-metre washbasin appear as seamlessly integrated components of a single, cohesive vision. This unity is reinforced by a disciplined material palette: oiled cherry wood—handcrafted by skilled joiners—establishes a warm, natural foundation that extends through the living areas via cherry parquet flooring. In contrast, the private zones surrounding the bedroom and dressing room feature a continuous, jointless cement floor that flows organically into the wellness shower. From the bathroom, access opens to a dedicated wellness terrace complete with sauna, sun deck, and outdoor hot tub, all framed by natural landscaping.
