Positioned just steps from Düsseldorf Central Station, the building at Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 1 opened as the main post office in 1991. Its postmodern natural stone façade belies a complex interior marked by soaring ceilings—some reaching seven metres high. RKW Architektur + faced the demanding task of transforming this landmark into a flexible cultural and civic hub, all while keeping operations running.

The challenge proved formidable: renovating a 25,000-square-metre building without interrupting service, including the German Pension Insurance printing facility that occupied part of the building throughout construction. Add to this the logistical constraints of an inner-city location, and the scope became ambitious indeed. Yet those dramatic ceiling heights—initially a puzzle—became a gift. The independent theatres FFT Juta and FFT Kammerspiele now occupy a beautifully proportioned space housing a 285-seat auditorium and two rehearsal stages. The new central library claims roughly half the renovated space across the second and third floors, where the building's generous proportions enable an expansive, naturally flowing visitor experience complete with seating, a café, and direct access to a panoramic roof terrace. The children's and youth library sections integrate seamlessly on the second floor. The fourth level, arranged around a central light-filled atrium, serves the school administration of Düsseldorf. A striking glazed foyer spanning the full building height welcomes visitors and frames views onto Konrad-Adenauer-Platz, with high-speed elevators ensuring smooth circulation throughout. Perhaps most striking are four gilded frames mounted on the roofline—a public art commission by Barbara Wille that serves as a beacon, drawing the eye and inviting all to discover Düsseldorf's newest cultural destination.
