Where Contradictions Find Harmony

Subtle colour shifts and thoughtful lighting define the flowing living spaces

How can two seemingly opposing design principles coexist within a single apartment? Lotos Architecture offers a compelling answer through this residential project. The design reconciles the client's vision of open, flowing spaces with the practical need for distinct zones. At its heart lies a refined approach to lighting and a masterful use of colour across all surfaces. Throughout, unexpected architectural details create moments of intrigue and delight.

The soft grey walls of the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area create a striking transition into the pristine white hallway beyond. A custom oak cabinet, stained to echo African wenge wood, anchors the living room's rear wall while subtly defining its boundary from the hall. The dark cabinetry feels weightless, thanks to a slender light cove running along its upper edge. This indirect lighting—a recurring design motif—works in concert with layered ambient illumination and sculptural wall, floor, and pendant fixtures to enliven the entire space.
Yet daylight proves equally essential to the design narrative. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, generously proportioned, blur the boundary between interior and terrace, expanding the living experience outward. A continuous flooring of pale porcelain stoneware tiles—each measuring 1.50 x 1.50 metres—flows uninterrupted from entry hall through living and dining zones onto the external terrace. This continuity creates a compelling visual pull the moment you enter. Emerging from the lift, your eye is naturally drawn through the hallway toward the open air beyond. Visual clutter has been eliminated entirely. Storage and utility spaces nestle discreetly behind white built-in cabinetry, which ingeniously incorporates the guest cloakroom. The kitchen echoes these white surfaces, punctuated with bold black accents and layered with varied light sources.

The dressing room reinforces the same restrained aesthetic with its simple white cabinetry. The flooring transitions almost seamlessly, shifting to warm oak planks throughout the bedroom and dressing areas while maintaining the light colour palette. At the bed's headwall, plant-fibre woven panelling introduces an unexpected hint of warmth and texture—one of the more distinctive details that punctuate this interior. The bathroom, too, features its own refined flourishes. Undulating, mirror-finish tiles form a sculptural splash guard behind the freestanding bathtub. Light plays across these surfaces like an art installation, transforming the utilitarian into the poetic. Here, harmony emerges effortlessly from the interplay of contrasts.
