Where Culture Meets Faith

St. Johannes in Dorsten finds new purpose as a vibrant cultural and spiritual hub

Church closures have become commonplace across Germany in recent years, with countless buildings facing demolition or abandonment. Dorsten offers a different story. Through thoughtful renovation, the St. Johannes parish church has been reimagined as both a cultural venue and spiritual gathering place—proving that historic sacred spaces can thrive with new purpose.

The Diocese of Münster's financial support and the transfer of this 1960s church to the Recklinghausen Regional Association made the conversion possible—transforming St. Johannes into the Dorsten-Marl Family Education Centre. Rather than choosing between cultural or religious use, the solution delivers both under one roof, benefiting everyone involved.Kuckert Architects approached the project with profound respect for Emil Steffann's original design, delivering solutions that balance architectural integrity with functional excellence. The renovated church interior is now more intimate, relocated from the apse to the western end and reimagined as a 100-seat chapel. A two-storey addition within the nave houses the education centre's diverse program spaces—seminar rooms, children's facilities, and gymnastics hall—while respecting the church's structural boundaries.Strategic design choices enhance accessibility and flow: the church tower now serves as the primary entrance, fitted with stairs and a passenger lift for barrier-free access to all levels. The adjacent rectory, demolished and replaced, continues the architectural dialogue, containing administrative offices, a teaching kitchen, and additional seminar spaces.Bold façade openings unify the ensemble, flooding both original and new sections with natural light. The brickwork—matching material and cross-joint detailing throughout—creates visual continuity between old and new, with open joints adding subtle texture and dimension.
