Bold Contrasts, Timeless Design
A surgical practice reimagined within a historic printing facility
At first glance, the location seemed an unlikely choice: a century-old family printing facility in Dormagen was to become home to Dr. Dr. Igelbrink's oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, MKG(08). Göke Praxiskonzepte from Düsseldorf—handling everything from planning and design to construction oversight—transformed the building's raw loft-like spaces into a welcoming sanctuary, blending industrial character with timeless, restorative design.
Three generations of the Igelbrink family ran the printing business on Marktstraße. As a boy, Dr. Dr. Sebastian Igelbrink witnessed the craft firsthand. But beyond inheriting his family's appreciation for meticulous craftsmanship, he also embraced his father's calling to medicine—eventually specializing in plastic surgery to unite both passions. Converting the former family printing house into his practice felt like a natural evolution. The two-part, naturally lit structure proved ideal for creating distinct functional zones while maintaining surgical precision in the practice's layout. One wing accommodates administration and staff facilities, complete with a separate employee entrance. The other houses three treatment rooms, two operating theatres, a recovery area, a general anaesthesia suite, and supporting spaces. A central reception and waiting area—with cloakroom and patient facilities—serves as the bridge between these zones. In all, the entirely ground-floor practice spans 287 m². Upon entry, patients encounter a bright, inviting, decidedly residential atmosphere—an impression rarely associated with medical facilities. The reception, crafted from mirrored glass elements with a gently curved line, draws the eye; above it, radial LED lighting echoes that curve throughout the space. Black-framed glass loft doors and dark furnishings provide compelling contrast against crisp white walls and continuous herringbone-pattern vinyl flooring. Premium classical and contemporary design elements engage in dialogue, creating an ideal setting where cutting-edge medicine meets enduring beauty.
