True to its original character

A striking Golzheim villa now serves as the new headquarters for an internationally renowned design studio

Kitzig Office, Düsseldorf – Executive Office, First Floor

Kitzig Design Studios occupies a comprehensively restored city villa built in the early 1920s on Rotterdamer Straße from designs by the acclaimed Düsseldorf architect Josef Kleesattel. This protected landmark—originally conceived for the director of the adjacent Golzheimer Hospital (now Paracelsus Clinic) and later serving as residence for the British Consul General in the post-war era—has been meticulously restored with exceptional care. The renovation honors the building's heritage while breathing new life into its spaces: the interior design respects the original character while introducing contemporary transformation, supported by state-of-the-art technical systems throughout.

Like many buildings in Golzheim's architectural heritage, this structure showcases brick cladding and expansive mullioned windows across two full storeys and an attic level. While the interior was substantially gutted, the building's landmark-protected stucco ceilings were carefully preserved. The comprehensive modernization and restoration project adheres to a refined black-and-white palette that flows seamlessly from ground floor to attic—creating visual continuity throughout. The first floor introduces a vibrant counterpoint: bold furniture, statement carpets, and striking colour accents—particularly the rich golden yellows in the conference room—deliberately punctuate the monochromatic scheme. These warm, carefully calibrated yellows infuse the space with positive energy, sparking creativity and mental clarity. Daylight floods through generous windows, while the adjoining balcony offers a perfect respite with Rhine views. In contrast, the ground floor meeting room with integrated kitchen commands attention through its unapologetic high-contrast aesthetic and striking patterned tilework that extends into the hallway, echoing the building's original design language. An elegant black wooden spiral staircase ascends to the first floor, where the light-suffused executive office—originally conceived as an artist's studio—takes centre stage. True to the home's character, the white heating enclosures have been meticulously restored. Cassina's sculptural furniture pieces integrate seamlessly into the spatial composition, establishing a stylistic dialogue with the room's artistic heritage. The attic houses the studio workspaces, with its generous volume extending to the roofline and framing compelling sight lines throughout. Recessed roof windows choreograph subtle interplays of light and shadow, reinforcing the bold black-and-white design narrative. The thoughtful layout accommodates collaboration, focused teamwork, and concentrated individual practice.
