Elegance in a Historic Landmark
The Postboutique Hotel brings together glamour and elegance in the heart of the city.
Among Wuppertal's most iconic buildings from the 1920s stands the former main post office at Kolk. Just a few years ago, this architectural gem was reimagined as a distinctive boutique hotel, ideally positioned near the main railway station and city centre. The building's striking façade—organically curved with softly rounded corners, completed in 1928—bears the clear imprint of the Reichspost architects' engagement with the modernist Neues Bauen movement. Today, the Postboutique Hotel spans three floors, offering over 73 generously proportioned rooms and studios.
Kitzig Design Studios of Düsseldorf has crafted a refined and inspiring interior that honours the building's careful restoration and steel-frame structure. The design draws deliberate inspiration from Art Deco's golden age, anchored by soft grey tones paired with delicate brass details that establish the core aesthetic. Custom-designed decorative elements—including a striking peacock motif in the restaurant, faceted mirrors with bevelled edges, and thoughtfully patterned wallpapers—reinforce the glamorous character of the hotel's shared spaces. Muted palettes of velvet green, slate blue, and salmon create an atmosphere of refined comfort throughout. Furniture is intentionally slim and graceful; in the bedrooms, the interplay between these delicate pieces and their loose arrangement achieves an effect that feels both light and sophisticated. The bathrooms continue this narrative through graphic wall treatments featuring decorative patterns that bridge past and present. Rooms are generously scaled: Comfort and Comfort Plus categories range from 24 to 28 m², while studios—outfitted with a kitchenette—reach an exceptionally comfortable 40 m², making them ideal for extended stays. The Rex Bar inhabits the lobby as a social hub, offering an impressive selection of wines, craft cocktails, soft drinks, and freshly pressed juices alongside curated snacks and finger food. The acclaimed Shiraz restaurant, which operates the bar, earned its Michelin star for its distinctive culinary approach. Worth noting too: the Rex Filmtheater and conference centre, housed in an adjacent building, launched with a film screening in 1889—when it too served as a hotel. Beautifully restored after decades of change, this art-house cinema now presents an expertly curated programme in an atmosphere of understated elegance and glamour, complemented not with popcorn, but with artisanal ice cream served tableside. The Postboutique Hotel transcends its role as accommodation—it cultivates a community of discerning guests.
