Transforming the Old Into Something New

In 2015, Mike Raaijmakers launched Johanenlies, a Berlin-based upcycling label devoted to his philosophy: "transforming the old into something new." Together with his partner Coco Prange and regional producers, the Dutch designer hand-crafts furniture and accessories from reclaimed construction timber. The wood comes from the Netherlands, and each piece can be tailored to your specifications—from materials to dimensions—in collaboration with the design team.

Among the studio's creations in Berlin's Mitte district is the Celeste Oak shelf, which strips away the unnecessary while maximizing storage. Its shelves feature recycled oak, and optional doors keep books and dishware protected from view. The piece sits on a powder-coated steel frame in pure white, with doors crafted from recycled oak that open and close smoothly via a push-to-open mechanism. The Valkenburg Oak table extends effortlessly with two removable panels to accommodate any length. Its solid recycled oak top features clean lines and a refined edge, while a protective layer of organic hard wax oil enhances the wood's natural patina. With its understated design and angled legs in powder-coated pure red steel, this table adapts seamlessly to any style or space—whether as a dining table in the kitchen or living room, or as a desk or conference table in an office.
