Innovative & Sustainable
Steffen Knies on Hamburg's new Porsche Approved & Service Centre in Rahlstedt – a concept with purpose
CUBE: Porsche's latest Hamburg project is the Porsche Approved & Service Centre in Rahlstedt. What inspired this new facility?
Steffen Knies: The centre responds to our growing customer base in Hamburg while embodying our commitment to quality and innovation. This isn't a traditional Porsche dealership – instead, we focus on servicing and Porsche Approved used vehicles. Notably, new car sales aren't part of our model here.
Tell us about the building's design. Did Stuttgart set architectural parameters?
The architecture is open and contemporary, featuring a modern aluminium façade inspired by our "Destination Porsche" concept. It's designed as an inviting brand hub that fosters meaningful dialogue and creative thinking. We welcome both longtime enthusiasts and new audiences alike. Wood creates warmth throughout the interior, while the aluminium exterior gives the building its distinctly Porsche character – a welcoming environment that balances modern aesthetics with human connection.
Sustainability seems to play a significant role as well?
Absolutely. The building meets KfW 40 standards, and we're pursuing platinum certification from the German Sustainable Building Council. We recycle rainwater for our vehicle wash system and have implemented an extensive landscaping concept featuring native, insect-friendly plants. Our roofs – spanning roughly 1,000 m² – are outfitted with photovoltaic panels. An intelligent energy management system channels solar gains directly to our electric vehicles through available charging stations. We offer both AC and DC charging, and Germany's fourth Porsche Charging Lounge is currently under construction. Once complete, drivers will access our ultrafast chargers, where a new Taycan can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes – depending on charge level, power output, and battery temperature.
What's the appetite for e-mobility among Porsche customers?
Interest is steadily climbing. Many appreciate the dynamic performance and innovation our electric vehicles deliver. Of course, we continue to offer hybrid and conventional powertrains alongside our growing electric lineup.
How do you address customer hesitations about electric vehicles?
Range remains the primary concern for many customers considering a fully electric purchase. That's why we actively invite prospects to test drive our electric models – the Taycan and our newly launched all-electric Macan – and discuss their questions one-on-one. This hands-on experience helps dispel doubts and spark genuine enthusiasm for electric mobility. We also host exclusive events where customers can truly experience the capabilities of our e-vehicles firsthand.
Do you drive fully electric yourself?
Yes, I've completed several trips to southern France in my Taycan. It's an exceptional travel companion, and the serene driving experience is remarkable. Strategic charging stops actually make longer holiday drives surprisingly relaxed and enjoyable.
Hamburg positions itself as the capital of e-mobility. What's your take – room for improvement?
The charging infrastructure here is genuinely impressive, especially compared to other cities. That said, adding more stations in high-traffic zones would enhance convenience even further.
What's your favourite Porsche?
Each model has distinct personality and purpose. Currently, I drive a 911 Targa – it's the perfect marriage of sportiness and elegance for me. For extended journeys and holidays, I happily switch to the Taycan or the brand-new all-electric Macan.
Mr Knies, thank you for your time.
