The Flexible Office

A non-profit organisation creates a modern, inspiring workspace.

In early July 2021, interaktiv – a non-profit dedicated to education, sports, and social services – relocated to its new offices on the second floor of Calor Carré in Ratingen-Ost. The landmark 1950s building is highly accessible: excellent public transport connections, an underground garage, and a multi-storey car park ensure convenient access for both staff and visitors. Nattler Architekten was tasked with designing the space. The challenge was compelling: working closely with the client to craft a flexible concept that accommodates approximately 130 employees across diverse work arrangements. The vision also includes space for a future professional development academy.

Long before the pandemic, interaktiv's workforce reflected the realities of modern work: the team spans full-time on-site staff, frequent travellers needing a hub for connection, hybrid workers commuting between home and office, part-time employees, and freelancers. Across roughly 730 m², the architects have masterfully created a home for all these working styles – a vibrant gathering place where individual needs are met and community thrives. The spacious layout immediately conveys openness; stepping into the reception area, you're welcomed by an inviting atmosphere. Open-plan zones foster spontaneous collaboration while thoughtfully designed alcoves provide focused work areas. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the spaces with natural light, while walnut wood elements – cabinetry, walls, and doors – infuse the interiors with warmth. Set against crisp white walls, these rich natural tones introduce understated sophistication.

The home staging experts at Tschangizian Homes in Essen drew inspiration from the building's mid-century origins, infusing the design with period character. Walnut, marble-look finishes, brass accents, and coloured cabinetry became defining stylistic elements throughout the interior. Existing furnishings were thoughtfully paired with contemporary pieces – designer furniture crafted from biodegradable polyethene – reflecting the organisation's commitment to sustainability.
