The Language of the Ellipse

Reimagining the Office at the Van Technology Center

Completed in Untertürkheim in 2005, the Mercedes-Benz Van Technology Center required comprehensive renovation. Gellink + Schwämmlein Architects were tasked with transforming the dated cellular office floor into an open, refined, and agile workspace—one built on a desk-sharing model that balances functionality and transparency with communication and atmosphere through a cohesive spatial design.

"An exciting project with its share of challenges," says Hanjo Gellink. The initial task was dismantling the cubicles to open up the floor and draw natural light across from both façades. The central meeting zone required transparent elements to maintain daylight penetration throughout. The building's distinctive elliptical footprint presented another layer of complexity, demanding a carefully considered design language for all interior elements. Beyond that, modernizing and seamlessly integrating the building systems constituted a significant portion of the renovation scope.
"Our design concept centers on creating an agile, welcoming workspace with flexible work modes," explains Markus Schwämmlein, "while honoring—and even accentuating—the building's compelling existing architecture." The result speaks for itself. The elliptical geometry elegantly echoes throughout the reimagined office. Every workstation is equally accessible and open, while the spatial layout achieves clarity and connection through thoughtful design. This success stems largely from repositioning workstations along both the interior and perimeter façades, coupled with a striking ceiling redesign and integrated lighting strategy. Premium materials elevate the environment while enhancing acoustics across the entire floor. The conference rooms echo the elliptical form, their frameless glass walls softened by translucent curtains for privacy without sacrificing the flow of natural light. With daylight streaming in from both sides, visual continuity and spatial orientation remain intuitive throughout.
