The Altona Innovation Park marks the northern gateway to Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, which is being developed as a hub for science and research, business and innovation, housing and community life, as well as leisure and mobility. Renowned institutions such as DESY, the European XFEL, Fraunhofer ITMP and the University of Hamburg are located in the immediate vicinity. Specialists in the fields of life sciences, nano- and laser technologies, materials science and quantum technologies work here. The opening of the tecHHub Hamburg marked a first milestone for the Altona Innovation Park. Spanning five storeys with a total floor area of 5,491 m², the building offers young technology companies and research institutions cost-effective laboratory space (approx. 60 per cent) and office space (approx. 40 per cent). In addition, there are open-plan workspaces, shared infrastructure and areas for events and networking. The tecHHub Hamburg is fully let to Start-up Labs Hamburg. The building itself is also forward-looking: it was constructed by ADK Modulraum from Neresheim using 126 steel modules and features a timber façade with ground-level greening. Module sizes of up to five metres in width, 18 metres in length and four metres in height allowed for maximum flexibility to adapt the building individually to changing requirements. Eight months of production and assembly of the modules at the factory were followed by an eight-month construction period on site. The bespoke and environmentally sustainable design of the building emphasises the high quality and innovative character of the new quarter – both for its users and for the public image of the Science Campus.
