From Hobby Room to Lounge

A Gathering Space for Students and Entrepreneurs

Fachhochschule Wedel offers bachelor's and master's programmes in computer science, engineering, and business administration. With approximately 1,300 students, the university is known for its strong practical emphasis and access to state-of-the-art laboratories, workshops, and computing facilities. Through its Start-up Bridge initiative, the institution actively cultivates a collaborative and innovative entrepreneurial culture. This commitment led to the creation of a co-working space dedicated to students and founders. RoomArt Interior Design and Communication Design transformed a cramped, dimly lit storage room in the basement—previously used informally for hobby activities—into a bright, welcoming, and inspiring start-up lounge.

The original space presented a formidable challenge: mismatched salvaged furniture, sealed storage areas devoid of natural light, and severely restricted ceiling heights (under 2.20 m) throughout much of the room. The only saving grace was a window zone facing the atrium, offering tantalising glimpses of natural light and hints of the lounge's potential. The design strategy was elegant in its logic: convert low-ceiling areas into intimate seating alcoves, open up the sealed storage compartments with standard ceiling heights to expand the usable lounge area, and relocate remaining low-ceiling zones into concealed storage spaces behind the primary work zones. The result is a thoughtfully reconfigured spatial experience that progressively reveals a refined atmosphere and flexible working environment tailored to student needs.

The reception zone—featuring coat storage, catering facilities, and supply areas—easily adapts for small-group workshops. Linear, dimmable light strips become a signature design feature throughout. A secondary workshop area showcases an interactive magnetic whiteboard on a coloured wall surface, perfect for spontaneous brainstorming sessions and event announcements. Upholstered alcoves provide quiet retreats for focused work, while a glass-partitioned meeting room with acoustic treatment ensures confidentiality for sensitive discussions. Mobile trolleys are available for rent. High-top work tables, each equipped with integrated task lighting and USB charging, invite users to work while enjoying views outdoors. Pendant lights and ceiling fixtures serve as sculptural focal points within the open lounge. The palette—soft greys punctuated with blue accents and vibrant yellow highlights—conveys both approachability and energy. Through carefully placed graphics and typography, RoomArt seamlessly integrates the corporate identities of FH Wedel and Startup Bridge into the coworking environment.
