Hideaway Between Alpine Lake and Peaks
Nature-Inspired Architecture Redefines Alpine Luxury
Crystal-clear air, lush alpine meadows, and a turquoise-shimmering mountain lake – right in the center of it all: "Bergkristall – Mein Resort im Allgäu". There are few locations more beautiful for a wellness resort than this sun-drenched mountainside above Oberstaufen in the Allgäu Alps. In this idyllic, secluded setting at approximately 850 meters elevation, wellness seekers have been retreating for nearly 60 years. In 1967, Hedi and Hans Lingg opened a small mountain inn with a handful of guest rooms, which the family developed over the decades into a four-star-superior hotel. In 2018, it was thoughtfully redesigned in collaboration with Alpstein Architektur from Immenstadt – while retaining its authentic Alpine character: the façade combines natural wooden shingles with massive stone elements, and the expansive window surfaces on the front of the main building and lodge extensions mirror the surrounding landscape.
With six new lake suites directly on the resort's own mountain lake, Bergkristall opens a new chapter in 2026. Working together with Alpstein Architektur, the Lingg family has created distinctive retreats that unite nature, architecture, and privacy in a remarkable way. Within 65 m², living space, wellness, and landscape merge into a harmonious whole. Light oak wood, natural materials, and bathrooms with nagelfluh-patterned tiles reflect the colors of the Allgäu, while floor-to-ceiling windows make the lake the true protagonist. A separate bedroom and an open living area with kitchenette lend the suites the character of a private sanctuary. Each suite features a private sauna, a terrace of approximately 30 m², and a private jetty leading directly into the pristine mountain lake. Those inclined can start the day with a plunge into fresh spring water – or savor the morning with a custom-curated breakfast basket on their own terrace. From mid-August 2026, six additional mountain suites will complete the collection: these approximately 80 m² refuges are situated above the lake and open to the Allgäu mountain landscape through generous window fronts. Separate living and sleeping areas, private terraces with sauna and whirlpool, warm oak wood, natural materials, and a serene, earthy color palette create a timeless atmosphere. The culinary concept follows the same clear philosophy: in the new restaurant, primarily reserved for suite guests, regional ingredients are combined with French culinary traditions.
The bergkristall, one of the distinctive gemstones of the Allgäu Alps, is far more than just a namesake at the resort. Its clarity and luminous quality appear as a design leitmotif throughout the reductive architecture, natural materials, and deliberately choreographed sightlines. Guests receive a small bergkristall as a memento upon departure, while the 3,700 m² Kristall Spa spatializes this motif. One of the highlights is the 20-meter infinity outdoor pool, which offers a singular swimming experience with views of the Allgäu mountain landscape. Adjacent to it lies a new, covered outdoor whirlpool, nestled in the terrace-like garden setting. The water amenities are completed by an indoor lap pool, the new head spa, as well as a panoramic sauna overlooking the hotel's private wildlife enclosure. With a bit of luck, even the reigning stag "Hansi" might stroll by during your sauna session. Beyond pool and sauna, the atmosphere remains pleasantly tranquil: between steam baths, saunas, light-filled relaxation areas, and spaces dedicated to massage, Ayurveda, and cosmetic treatments, deceleration comes naturally. Indigenous woods, natural stone, clay, and lime surfaces imbue the spaces with warmth and echo the colors of the Allgäu landscape. Those seeking movement as balance can simply move to the two-story fitness studio, which is the first hotel in Germany to be equipped with the EGYM training system.
