One into Four
A residential home distinguished by its unconventional composition and spatial diversity
A small white piece of paper with a red sketch on it—that was the first step toward a big vision. "Go ahead!" was the clients' response when asked whether the design team wanted to develop the concept further beyond their initial sketch. The Cologne-based architecture and interior design firm hell und freundlich was pleasantly surprised when entrusted with the design development for this residential home: the proposed design deviated significantly from the single-story building the clients had originally envisioned. The architecture firm's design concept was rooted in the generous, park-like property, with the actual construction area only emerging toward the rear. This made it all the more important not to allow the building's massing to appear monotonous and dominating. Instead, a building ensemble composed of several distinctly proportioned, heterogeneous volumes seemed more appropriate for the site and promised a more visually compelling result. This concept was reinforced through carefully coordinated yet varied facade materials: the interplay between the dark timber facade and the light brick facade strengthens and emphasizes this distinctive architectural character. The floor plan arranges four one- to three-story cubes in a subtle offset configuration. Depending on the width of each building volume, the gabled roofs—each pitched at a different gradient—define the residential footprint. The over 450 m² of living space across three floors reveals itself gradually rather than at first glance—it unfolds progressively as one moves through the house. The interior is characterized by a bold mix of colors and materials, creating a warm atmosphere and providing the family with a comfortable and inviting home. Particularly important to the clients was avoiding pure white or glossy surfaces and finishes. Distinctive wallpapers, fabrics, custom built-ins, and thoughtfully designed lighting make each room a special highlight. The large, open living-dining area serves as the heart of family life. In winter, it invites cozy evenings by the crackling fireplace. In summer, the expansive sliding glass doors open wide, and life shifts into the generous, park-like garden. Along the way, the architects received a "thank you card" from the clients noting that the home felt "principled yet adaptable," "calming yet inspiring," and simply "feels good"—clear evidence that the "big vision" turned out to be a very good one indeed.
