Precision Within Angles

A former exhibition pavilion in HafenCity transforms into a state-of-the-art eye clinic

Housed in HafenCity's former exhibition pavilion—positioned alongside the historic Old Harbour Office and integrated into the Cinnamon Tower ensemble—this new eye and laser centre represents a masterful adaptive transformation. Where urban planners once showcased the ongoing development of Hamburg's revitalized waterfront, Cologne-based architects atmosphäre have crafted a precisely zoned clinical practice that honors the building's distinctive architectural character.

Patients enter via the main Osakaallee entrance onto a mezzanine level, greeted by generous staircases. To accommodate a substantial reception area, the landing extends strategically beyond the lower flight. Above, the gallery level houses the examination rooms—a generous eight-metre-high space with angled walls and ceilings that echo the building's external geometry. Floor-to-ceiling glazing on two facades frames views of the Old Harbour Office and Maritime Museum, while preserving the soaring, light-filled atmosphere with minimal additional structure. A single spatial divider carves out areas for preliminary assessments and cloakroom facilities. The gallery's lower zone takes on a more refined character: a welcoming coffee bar and kitchenette anchor the waiting area before patients pass through a discreet black door into the medically sterile surgical zone. This comprises a patient changing room, disposal facilities, staff airlock, and operating theatre. Following the procedure, patients transition to a private rest nook where they can remove protective wear and recover briefly.

The design team was equally committed to articulating the distinction between the building's architecture and its interior expression. While the structure plays with angles and dynamic forms, all interior furnishings adopt a pure, linear language—emphasizing clean horizontals and verticals. This material and formal contrast extends throughout: warm, darker tones paired with genuine wood surfaces establish an atmosphere that feels both refined and welcoming. The new eye and laser centre strengthens the vibrant Überseequartier with an enduring programme and a presence that speaks with quiet authority.
