A Thoughtful Design
Residential Quarter on Löbbeckestraße Nominated for the German Building Award
The construction project "A Home for Everyone on Löbbeckestraße" has earned a nomination for the German Building Award in the "New Buildings" category. Developed through a partnership between the Städtische Wohnungsbau-Gruppe Düsseldorf (SWD) and BDA Düsseldorf, this apartment complex stretches 50 meters in length, featuring a five-story residential wing and a six-story residential tower. Its open, transparent character is defined by expansive windows, private balconies, and terraces, while covered galleries on each level provide charming access to the individual units and further reinforce the building's welcoming aesthetic.
The entire complex embraces openness and accommodates everything from one- to five-room apartments. Woven into an existing park, the development creates multiple spaces for community life—verdant landscapes, a playground, and gardening opportunities that blend seamlessly with the surrounding greenery. Ground-floor residents enjoy private tenant gardens adjacent to their terraces. As a climate-conscious KfW 55 efficiency building with district heating, the structure achieves significantly reduced CO₂ emissions. An extensive green roof adds thermal insulation in winter while naturally cooling the building during summer months. SWD's €10.7 million investment here represents a special project for several compelling reasons. It's the first building in the new Lacombletstraße development on the former study institute grounds in Düsseltal. More significantly, the project was conceived in 2017 with a distinctive purpose: creating housing for refugees and those seeking affordable accommodation. This founding principle remains evident in the community's diverse, international character today.
A BDA Düsseldorf project group contributed the architectural design pro bono, actively engaging refugees in shaping the vision. The result is a building defined by open architecture and abundant space for community connection and collaboration within a park-like setting. As SWD Managing Director Klaus Feldhaus notes: "We're delighted that this housing project—with 38 publicly subsidized apartments—has earned recognition through a nomination for Germany's premier housing construction award. This acknowledgment demonstrates that the social housing sector continues to deliver architecturally compelling, innovative solutions." The German Building Award stands as the nation's most prestigious honor in residential construction.
