Communication at the Center
A modern administrative building where open workspaces foster dialogue
BGS Beta-Gamma-Service, a leading radiation technology specialist, needed a new administrative headquarters. The vision was clear: build a structure that prioritizes dialogue across all levels and departments. To ensure the design would truly meet everyone's needs, Freyler Industriebau initiated the project with a collaborative "concept day," bringing together architects and engineers with BGS leadership and nearly 20 employees from across the organization. "Beyond standard office workstations, we designed the 'marketplace' as a vibrant hub connecting administration and production—complete with a canteen, sports facilities, and social spaces," explains architect Klaudia Stritzke, who developed the design alongside her colleague Christian Hötzel.
The Wiehl site presented a significant topographical challenge: a 4.5-meter elevation change across the available land. "Rather than undertake extensive earthworks, we designed three distinct building volumes, each serving a different function," says Stritzke. "The office wing sits at parking level, while the marketplace occupies hall level one story below. Between them, a connecting structure clad in Siberian larch wood bridges both elevations." The office areas feature an open, communicative work environment spread across two levels, with individual workstations positioned along the perimeter to maximize natural light. The interior hub serves multiple purposes: quiet phone and video call booths, intimate seating nooks, open meeting zones for impromptu stand-ups, private focus areas for deep work or confidential discussions, plus dedicated space for shared resources and storage.
From the earliest planning stages, the team collaborated closely with interior design specialists and acoustic experts to create the ideal environment. The standout feature? A bold industrial aesthetic: electrical systems and mechanical infrastructure—heating pipes, ventilation ducts—remain exposed and visible overhead, with no dropped ceiling to hide them. This honesty in design is reinforced by raw concrete walls, while carefully chosen furnishings and color palettes inject warmth and personality. The result is a thoughtfully designed, inspiring workplace that genuinely encourages cross-departmental collaboration and strengthens team connection.
