A Modern Country House

A family's custom-designed home where sophisticated design meets warmth and comfort

The couple wanted a classic, modern country house for their family of four. They commissioned the Mollwitz architectural firm to design a customised, two-storey detached house in the Nordheide region. However, the unique and attractive location of the property impressed everyone involved so much that the plans were adapted to comply with the strict building regulations regarding construction, materials, roof pitch, knee wall height and building height. The close, constructive collaboration between the owners and architect Christine Mollwitz resulted in an inspiring process in which the room layout and space allocation were rethought.

The guiding principle was to create a spacious, open-plan living area. As the building had to be single-storey with a gabled roof, a representative entrance gable was created with a window element that extends almost the entire height of the house and an integrated entrance door. Behind it is an air space with a gallery in the attic. In this line, on the garden side, is the family's central dining area, above which another air space opens up. The design element of the entrance gable is echoed in the large glazing facing the garden.

The significant slope of the property was incorporated into the design by raising the living area by two steps. This created a natural division into different areas on the ground floor. The garden was also laid out in terraces on several levels. The traditional, small-format facing brick and the striking swing doors, reminiscent of historic barn doors, emphasise the country house character. The house blends harmoniously into its rural surroundings and impresses on the inside with its modern, spacious floor plan, which combines contemporary living with a cosy atmosphere. In addition, the house has a wellness area with a sauna, an underground car park and modern building services.
