A stunning makeover of a Sixties-era home
A family searching for more space fell in love with this unrenovated 1961 terraced house on Munich's outskirts. The owners enlisted architect Enrico Schreck of millimeta in Munich to sensitively renovate and adapt the home to their needs. The interplay of flat and pitched roofs, combined with varied floor levels and shifting building depths, gives the house its distinctive geometry and unconventional layout. The challenge was to honor these exceptional spatial qualities while optimizing them for contemporary living.
The ground floor was thoughtfully reconfigured to meet the needs of a five-person household. A generous entry leads into an open-plan kitchen—the home's beating heart—which flows naturally into the living area. The existing fireplace sits at the room's center, subtly defining different zones. A garden-side extension adds living space while preserving the home's clean exterior lines. Floor-to-ceiling windows dissolve the boundary between inside and out. Strategically integrated built-in storage keeps clutter at bay. Two carefully chosen colors establish a serene, uncluttered interior: white for all cabinet fronts and restored original doors, and Venato—applied in thoughtful gradations—for the windows, entrance door, walls, ceilings, and base facade. Concrete-effect tiles ground the floors, bathrooms, and terrace. Warm oak accents appear in the wardrobes, window seat, staircase, and upper-floor flooring. The facade continues this restrained palette: white plaster below, pre-weathered, rough-sawn spruce above. A new roof window replaces the upper-floor street-facing window, dramatically improving natural light. A refined canopy marks the entrance without fuss. The new electrical system uses bus technology, while a heat pump provides efficient heating. The result—thanks to the exceptional dedication and craftsmanship of all involved—is nothing short of remarkable: this 1961 home now radiates the clarity and polish of a contemporary new build.
