Narrative architecture
New daycare center building for three groups as an inspiring workshop for children's creativity
Dannien Roller Architekten + Partner inserted a two-storey timber hybrid building into the differently modeled terrain in such a way that an earth-embedded sloping floor was created. The old trees were preserved and the rotation of the building creates a forecourt as a transition to the protected grounds of the daycare center. The rear-ventilated façade made of black flamed spruce wood in combination with bright blue-green glazed spruce wood arouses curiosity. The glazed main entrance is set at an angle into the façade, framed by the blue-green, which is reminiscent of mountain and forest lakes in its intensity.
The southern side of the building with the group rooms opens up to the garden via floor-to-ceiling windows and a striking pergola construction - in contrast to the rather closed northern side. The dark steel supports of the pergolas appear like a second skin thanks to their filigree groupings. The zone between the house and the outside world allows for privacy and social interaction at the same time. When the sun protection is closed, two hot-dip galvanized steel staircases lead to the varied play and activity area. The east side with its glazed sloping storey is full of excitement. The building appears to float weightlessly over the slope. Reflections in the glass and the supporting structure, which shines through like stylized roots, allow architecture and nature to flow into one another. The clear and uncluttered layout of the building is adapted to children's need for structure. A wide central corridor provides access to both the first floor and the upper floor. The service rooms and the central elevator shaft made of exposed concrete and the staircase are located to the north. To the south, with direct access to the outside, are the common rooms. The foyer, which can be used for a variety of purposes, is adjacent to the office of the daycare center management and the kitchen area. The crèche rooms are shielded off to the east. The forest and nature theme continues inside. The complex communication system of materials and colors creates associations with a sunlit forest clearing. Walls made of light-colored spruce "grow" out of the dark brown textured, earthy rubber floor. The ceilings, suspended with light blue wood wool panels, bring the sky into the rooms. The bright sulphur-yellow paint on the oak doors symbolizes the sun and wild forest flowers. This nursery building combines a modern, aesthetic design language with natural materials and dominant colors to create a narrative architecture.
