A Fascinating Process
Christian König designs and crafts concrete furniture
It all started with a concrete bread basket. As a self-taught designer, Christian König discovered a material that would become his true passion. His early explorations included custom furniture collaborations with various woodworkers and large-scale abstract painting. When a Michelin-starred restaurant commissioned his work, he finally found the medium that now defines his practice. Those delicate bread baskets taught him a crucial lesson: concrete demands precision and respect. Even small mixing errors or minor variations in raw materials can compromise an entire batch. Add just 100 ml more water, and the entire structure destabilizes. "Every cast is unique, demanding, and deeply rewarding," König explains. "Concrete forgives nothing—every flaw becomes part of the story." Yet this very unforgiving nature makes success all the more gratifying. Each time a casting emerges flawlessly from the mold, a truly singular piece is born. Carbon reinforcement plays a critical role in his process, enabling König to create exceptionally thin concrete slabs without sacrificing structural integrity—perfect for kitchen countertops, for instance. His Formdimensionen label in Hanau showcases pieces like the Chilli concrete table, featuring a steel substructure, and a turquoise-tinted lowboard with brass accents. Both embody stark minimalism and, like all his work, are one-of-a-kind. The air pockets trapped within the concrete ensure that no two surfaces are ever identical—each one truly individual.
