Charming and Inviting

Where Restoration Honors Tradition and Delivers Modern Living Comfort

The renovation of this historic hunting lodge in a Schleswig-Holstein village near Hamburg exemplifies the art of blending tradition with modern living. Meyer Terhorst Architects faced a compelling challenge: preserve the lodge's historic character while elevating it to contemporary comfort standards. The severely weathered structure required a thorough overhaul—a new concrete foundation, replacement of compromised timber elements and structural beams, and a complete roof renewal. To meet energy efficiency requirements without compromising the half-timbered façade's authentic appearance, the team installed mineral interior insulation. The original wooden windows, carefully removed and restored during the process, were reinstalled as charming links to the past.

The renovation equally addresses the demands of contemporary living. The ground floor of this 75 m² hunting lodge features an open-plan kitchen flowing into a generously proportioned living and dining area, along with an English-style bathroom. A tiled stove anchors the living spaces, while two comfortable bedrooms occupy the upper floor. Thoughtfully selected materials and finishes for floors and walls create rooms that feel both charming and welcoming. Smart home technology and an air-source heat pump deliver efficient heating and year-round comfort. A custom lighting design adds distinctive character throughout and completes the technical amenities.

The outbuilding—originally a garage—has been transformed into a guest house with sleeping loft, bathroom, and utility room. This 36 m² addition provides welcome flexibility while establishing an appealing courtyard setting that enhances the overall character of the property.

Meyer Terhorst Architects brought equally careful attention to the garden across the approximately 900 m² grounds. Expansive natural stone terraces create inviting spaces for gatherings and outdoor relaxation, while the traditionally planted garden—with its mature trees—fosters a serene atmosphere and provides a peaceful retreat. The thoughtful renovation imparts both a sense of ease and lasting value to the entire ensemble. The result: a space that preserves its heritage while fully embracing the comforts of contemporary life.
