Colour, Form and Light

A 1980s detached home reimagined – refined lighting design meets sophisticated space

This 1980s home was reimagined for a family seeking both openness and retreat—a place to live fully and withdraw peacefully. The 280 m² residence's compartmentalised layout was purposefully opened up to create fluid, connected spaces. On the ground floor, kitchen, dining, and living areas flow seamlessly together. A striking walnut core anchors the living space, concealing a staircase and storage behind its elegant mass. Floor-to-ceiling glazing dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, a theme echoed throughout the dining area's almost entirely glazed expanse. The freestanding kitchen island embraces the open-plan ethos while fostering natural gathering and conversation. Visitors barely notice the additional private spaces tucked discreetly behind a floor-to-ceiling library wall in the entrance—these rooms form a sanctuary for the owners. Despite abundant windows, their intimate proportions and enclosed form create a warm, personal atmosphere.

The walnut core extends vertically to the upper floor, transforming into a slatted structure that accentuates the generous ceiling height while casting evocative shadows as daylight shifts across its surface. Between the bathroom and bedroom, the wooden slats provide a refined visual filter—separation with subtlety. A restrained material palette—walnut, Belgian natural stone on the ground floor, and wool-silk carpet above—allows the owners' curated furnishings and vibrant art collection to take centre stage. The interiors' colour narrative emerges organically from these thoughtfully selected materials and pieces, creating a harmonious whole.

The lighting design by candela lighting design matches this refined, sophisticated interior with equal precision: indirect light emanates from concealed slots, washing walls, floors and ceilings in a gentle glow, while strategically positioned recessed fixtures highlight the rooms envisioned by blocher partners. The meticulous attention to luminaire installation demonstrates the exacting standards required for truly accomplished lighting design.
