A Munich-based modular living system
Thomas Kandler and Robert Kern design modular solutions for every lifestyle
Few pieces of furniture reveal as much about their owners as a shelf does. Thomas Kandler and Robert Kern design with this conviction at heart. To empower people with greater freedom in selecting their shelving, the two trained carpenters—who met while studying architecture at Munich University of Applied Sciences—created the 7172 modular system in 2014. Their work brings together a passion for craftsmanship with wood and an enthusiasm for innovative design solutions. 7172 adapts to every life stage and purpose. Its modules combine freely, functioning as a side table, bench, sideboard, shelf, or room divider—and even as structural elements for retail displays, trade shows, and offices. At the heart of every component lies an elegantly simple system: a groove mechanism paired with discreet hardware that holds everything together while enabling endless flexibility. Each module accepts stabilising and acoustic elements, guidance systems, labelling solutions, and varied finishes and fronts. Variable shelf depths unlock additional possibilities, especially for commercial applications: oversized shelves click into place without tools and safely bear substantial weight. Every aspect—from layout to design—is entirely customizable and can be reconfigured at any moment, even long after installation. Since shelves slide on from the front, there's no need to disassemble the sides. Reshaping your shelving or sideboard couldn't be simpler, whether you're setting it up for the first time or reimagining it years later.
