Timelessly Modern

A dynamic interplay of materials, colors, and light defines this retirement home designed by Swiss studio Bel Etage for a vibrant young-at-heart couple. Three decades earlier, the same architects had completed the interior of the clients' single-family home – an experience so successful that they entrusted the studio with their new apartment as well. The couple's vision was clear: contemporary design with timeless appeal, a space that would remain equally liveable and comfortable throughout their later years. The central challenge was transforming the modest footprint into an environment that radiates generosity and openness.

This philosophy crystallized in a five-meter dining table and island counter, its European walnut top anchored by a sculptural base of refined, large-format ceramic tiles. Above it hovers a suspended pendant fixture with orbs at varying heights – an element that's both playful and functional, casting inviting light while serving as a striking focal point. Oversized round handles in solid wood echo the counter's materiality, infusing the kitchen with personality and presence. Since the standard floor plan offered minimal storage, the team conceived 15 bespoke storage solutions distributed across bedrooms, hallways, and a fitness area. Their fronts feature sound-absorbing milled detailing that's equally purposeful and refined. This restrained playfulness extends into the bathrooms and toilets, where the clients' signature hue – a bold blue – creates a distinctive graphic expression. Towel rails, shampoo dispensers, and shelving were all custom-crafted with a unified philosophy: functionality, design, and spaciousness. A cohesive flooring palette anchors the entire space – pale oak parquet in the bedrooms, low-maintenance ceramic in kitchen and bath areas. This warm, understated beige foundation continues into the ceiling, creating visual continuity throughout.
