Where Paths Meet & Community Gathers

A striking new canteen and administration building transforms the offerings at this Mainz integrated comprehensive school

A child's learning progress is shaped not only by the quality of instruction, but equally by the spaces they inhabit. At an all-day school, welcoming communal areas—a vibrant canteen, thoughtfully designed library spaces—are just as vital to educational success as the classroom itself. The new canteen and administration building at IGS Auguste Cornelius in Mainz-Hechtsheim represents the second phase of a comprehensive three-stage transformation of the entire school campus. A new primary school building and the final phase of the IGS expansion are currently underway or in planning. This new structure serves a dual purpose: it functions as a vital hub and gathering space, bridging two schools—the Theodor-Heuss-Grundschule and IGS Auguste Cornelius—that were previously separated by their distinct educational models and housed in separate facilities.

Working in collaboration, Heidacker Architects and Sinopoli Architects designed the building to transform the schoolyard into a bright, open green heart. Clean lines and a calm architectural language create clarity both inside and out—intuitive pathways and a thoughtful palette of warm colors guide students naturally through the space. On the ground floor, the architects maximized openness; on the first floor, a striking reading courtyard for the library takes advantage of the central atrium, flooding upper levels with natural light. The ground-floor canteen doubles as a flexible event space, serving both schools in two seatings. Two distinct, school-specific entrances maintain the requested separation of dining areas while maintaining unified operations. The kitchen zone sits discreetly away from the schoolyard, allowing efficient service access without disrupting daily school activities. And here's the remarkable part: this entire project was built while the school remained fully operational. Through meticulous coordination of all construction phases, the architects ensured safe, uninterrupted use of school grounds and cleanly separated construction traffic from student movement. Former Mainz Mayor Michael Ebling summed up the project's impact: "This new building is a tremendous asset for both Theodor-Heuss Primary School and IGS Auguste Cornelius. By sharing the canteen, the two schools have gained a genuine gathering place that will strengthen our entire school community."
