Sculptural Integration

A detached house in Bochum: spacious living within a constrained building envelope.

A plot at a turning point in Bochum's small new Stiepel development proved ideal. Ricardo Ferreira Architects from Meerbusch were brought in from the earliest stages to design a home for the family—then three members, eventually five with the birth of twins. Working within the site's tight constraints, they created a custom-tailored residence that maximizes space while maintaining optimal orientation and privacy from neighbouring views.

The double garage faces north, strategically positioned to screen the property from an elevated neighbour. A adjoining storage zone bridges to the cubic residential volume—a two-storey structure with partial basement. The gently sloped driveway becomes an inviting forecourt framed by expansive windows. Inside, the entrance hall—generous, luminous, and lined with built-in storage—creates a sightline that flows through the entire house and into the garden. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels and sliding doors blur the boundary between the living area and south-facing terrace, which is shaded and protected by a sculptural exposed-concrete canopy. To the east, the dining area opens onto its own terrace and covered outdoor space. A single-flight staircase rises from the entrance, its strategic openings reinforcing the home's openness and light-filled character. Galleries flanking the staircase lead to two children's bedrooms, a bathroom, and a flexible study—converted to a third bedroom when the family unexpectedly expanded with twins. Directly opposite the staircase, the master suite features a full-height retractable glass door for complete privacy, opening to a master bath and walk-in closet. The architects orchestrated every detail: lighting design, bespoke built-ins, and bathrooms executed with precision. Warm oak parquet contrasts the predominantly white walls and cabinetry. Recessed ceilings house carefully positioned spotlights and architectural accent lighting. A smart home system manages climate, lighting, and security with ease.
