Barn in a double pack

A sustainable house made of wood with a slate roof

A young couple from Berlin has built a holiday home in a tiny village in the Uckermark region. He is a qualified designer, she is a qualified set designer. The builders benefited from the fact that he had trained as a carpenter before starting his studies and that she has a keen sense of interior design thanks to her profession.

The first thing you notice about this building is that it actually looks like two houses. Their design is very reminiscent of the typical barns in the area. Two of these "barns" stand close together, offset from each other, but form a single unit. This creates exciting spaces and outdoor areas that are protected from view. One of the gable ends is fully glazed, except for the chimney that is built into it. The house is located at the front of the 5,000 m² plot, close to the road. It is constructed using timber frame construction and the façade consists of shimmering grey wooden slats. The 45-degree pitched gable roofs are covered with grey slate tiles, which harmonise beautifully with the colour of the façade. This natural material was also an express wish of the homeowners. For the time being, it will remain as it is – solar panels may be installed on the roof to make the ecological heat pump even more efficient.

The house was built exclusively with sustainable natural materials. Despite its archaic, minimalist form, the modern new building blends in perfectly with its village surroundings. The almost floor-to-ceiling windows on the long sides are fitted with sliding shutters on the outside, so that the house can be completely closed off when no one is there.

The house has a total living space of 150 m². Centrally located between the two volumes, the three-sided glazed kitchen-diner with freestanding kitchen unit and open fireplace offers views of the idyllic landscape. There is also space for two bedrooms, two open sleeping galleries and two bathrooms. This means that you can spend a few days here not only as a couple, but also with family or friends, without feeling cramped.
