Modern School Campus

School Expansion: Where Heritage Meets Ecological Responsibility

Built as a barracks in 1935, Iserlohn's Seilersee campus seemed destined for military service. Today, following extensive modernization and expansion, these historic structures have been reimagined as a vibrant learning environment. PASD Feldmeier + Wrede Architects masterfully orchestrated the transformation, preserving each building's character while weaving them into a cohesive, dynamic whole.

A clear architectural language distinguishes the original plaster-clad structures from new constructions in warm sand-colored brick. Resource efficiency guided every decision—interventions remained minimal and purposeful. The central corridors were preserved and thoughtfully expanded with generous glazing at two strategic points, enhancing natural light and ventilation for optimal indoor comfort. Comprehensive energy retrofitting brings all buildings into full compliance with current EnEV standards. The new construction echoes the original buildings' functional clarity. A striking four-story connector wing—featuring crisp, contemporary lines—serves as the campus's organizational hub, housing flexible study and break areas alongside administrative spaces. The ground floor opens onto a sheltered courtyard with cafeteria, canteen, and outdoor terrace. The single-story foyer, positioned on the former forecourt, anchors the main entrance while doubling as a flexible community space that flows seamlessly into the events hall. Above the foyer sits a verdant roof terrace—a generous retreat for upper-level students that actively contributes to the school's ecological balance. A reclaimed parking area provides younger students with an inviting sports and recreation zone.

A triple sports hall completes the campus, its brick walls punctuated by expansive translucent glazing that articulates the facade and floods entries with natural light. Like the other buildings, specialized spaces are defined by fiber cement panels—notably the gymnastics room, accented by a distinctive bay window. Inside, the green trapezoidal metal roof and pale walls create an airy, contemporary atmosphere.
