A Place Worth Arriving At

Leverkusen's new central bus station impresses with openness and visual clarity in every direction

Arrival, departure, transfers, waiting, pickups, drop-offs – bus stations are far more than transit points. As vital hubs for both regional and long-distance travelers, they must offer genuine comfort and welcoming environments, even when stays are brief. Successful design bridges human needs with technical, environmental, and economic demands. For Leverkusen's central bus station, Pahl + Weber-Pahl Architects selected forms and materials that elegantly satisfy all these requirements.

The covered expanse of the new bus station sits strategically between long-distance platforms to the east and regional and local transit platforms to the west. An elliptical membrane roof spans the central platforms reserved for regional and local services. Fire-resistant, Teflon-coated PVC embraces the supporting steel structure, anchored at eight ground points, creating a clear spatial organization. The roof surface channels water through a series of funnels for efficient drainage. Soft diffuse light filters through the semi-transparent membrane, mingling with natural daylight pouring through circular openings – a strategy that elevates the passenger experience in waiting areas while minimizing artificial lighting needs. This thoughtful approach strengthens both comfort and cost-effectiveness, further enhanced by durable, maintenance-free materials. Divided into eight sections, the roof membrane can be selectively renewed if needed, while the steel framework itself is engineered for decades of reliable service.

The station's adaptability shines through its smart functional separation of the roof, passenger information systems, and bus bays. This design choice proved invaluable during construction. When the project required retrofitting the sawtooth-pattern bus bays for articulated buses and adding tactile guidance systems for accessibility, the modular design accommodated these changes seamlessly. The Leverkusen central bus station demonstrated exceptional flexibility even as it was being built – proof of its thoughtful, future-ready design.
