Cubic Composition

A well-structured home creates an atmosphere of quiet sophistication.

Located in Cologne's southern suburbs, this residential neighborhood is defined by expansive properties with private gardens and an eclectic mix of villas and single-family homes. Daniel Volske Architects, in collaboration with synarchitekten, designed this family residence around a cubic composition that provides structural clarity from within while making a striking visual impact from the street through its deliberately offset volumes.

The local development plan presented a significant constraint: it required different roof forms for buildings of varying heights. With the new construction set well back from the property line, a sloping roof was essentially mandated. This height limitation became fundamental to the cubic design—a strategy also applied to three adjacent residences by Daniel Volske, which share identical spacing and a cohesive volumetric language. The offset cubic composition serves multiple functions: it provides shade for the generous garden-facing glazing, creates sheltered canopies for the entrance and terrace, and externally expresses the home's internal organization. The ground floor features a welcoming entry that flows into an expansive kitchen-dining-living space opening directly to the garden. Upstairs, a generously proportioned master suite with ensuite dressing room and bath occupies the garden side, while two children's bedrooms with shared bath face the opposite direction. An open gallery overlooking a vertical void connects both levels, while the basement—housing office, storage, and mechanical systems—remains concealed from view. Following the architects' specifications, all kitchen cabinetry, vanities, fireplace, and built-in elements were custom-crafted. The restrained material palette reinforces the home's serene, minimalist character. Energy performance is achieved through solid-block thermal insulation construction, complemented by an air-source heat pump and climate control system, both integrated with rooftop photovoltaics.
