Everything Under One Roof

The "New South Exhibition Centre" creates a multifunctional gateway – connecting both the fairgrounds and the city.

Positioned between the verdant expanses of the Rhine riverbank and Nordpark, the "New South Exhibition Centre" by slapa oberholz pszczulny | sop architects occupies a uniquely urban setting for a fairground. The approximately 7,800 m² translucent canopy establishes a striking visual landmark – one that commands attention not only from the water but from throughout the city itself.

In the truest sense of the phrase, this structure brings together all functions beneath a single roof. The expansive exhibition forecourt—complete with taxi ranks, bus stops, bicycle parking, electric vehicle charging stations, and underground garage access—is sheltered by the 20-metre-high roof, as are the transparent southern entrance with its adaptable conference spaces and the versatile new Exhibition Hall 1. The design seamlessly integrates the adjacent congress centre while introducing flowing green transitions to the Rhine waterfront and Nordpark. These neighbouring green zones will soon welcome fair visitors seeking respite and recreation. The canopy's polygonal form—stretching 170 metres in length and reaching up to 93 metres in width—generates a dynamic, sculptural presence that organically derives from the site's triangular footprint. Diamond-shaped cushions of translucent fibreglass create a vibrant roof texture that comes alive, particularly as daylight fades. "Through the canopy, the expansive forecourt transforms into an architectural space nestled within established greenery," notes Jurek M. Slapa, managing partner of sop architekten. This creates an ideal setting for open-air events, while the directly accessible south entrance foyers accommodate additional gatherings. Within the fully glazed, 16.5-metre-high entry hall stands a striking metal-clad pavilion housing flexible, interconnectable conference rooms. From here, visitors proceed directly into the new exhibition hall, its 12,000 m² of column-free exhibition space offering maximum adaptability. The hall can be completely darkened and partitioned as needed, ensuring multifunctional versatility. The first floor houses an additional conference area accommodating approximately 1,200 attendees. Sustainably harvested oak wood provides warm counterpoint to the exposed concrete and glass, while relaxation zones, dining facilities, and snack bars—accented by refined furnishings in soft, sophisticated tones—complete the inviting interior landscape.
