Small yet striking
A striking new foyer expands the Forum Wasserturm
The Forum Wasserturm is a respected cultural landmark in Meerbusch, known for its world-class music and cabaret programming. Dominated by the iconic water tower that lends it its name, this historic 1912 courtyard hall also features a street-facing café. Yet it lacked one essential element: an inviting foyer to properly welcome visitors as they enter the performance space.
Düsseldorf-based RKW Architektur + rose to the challenge, designing a compact 100 m² structure that delivers surprisingly sophisticated results. The narrow structure sits flush with the property line while opening generously to the courtyard through expansive glazing—a vibrant gathering space during warmer months. A striking double-leaf anodized aluminum entrance door signals the new main access, positioned at the foyer's threshold between the performance hall and café. Inside, the foyer astonishes through both form and function. Raw concrete walls, polished concrete flooring, and a perforated stainless steel ceiling embedded with LED lines create visual drama through contrast and reflective surfaces. Three custom built-in elements serve multiple purposes: they strategically disguise structural columns while functioning as a multifunctional reception desk complete with beverage coolers and heavy-duty storage for event setups. The outer units work double duty—serving as coat check and exhibition walls simultaneously. What emerges is a compact yet highly purposeful transition space.
