Tactile sensuality
Sandra Nitz creates distinctive porcelain designed for everyday living
Craftsmanship runs through Sandra Nitz's veins. Her grandfather was a shoemaker who, after completing his apprenticeship, set out on the traditional journey of a journeyman. His tales captivated young Sandra throughout her childhood in Upper Franconia. After training as a wholesale and export trade clerk, Nitz made a bold pivot—she apprenticed as a ceramicist. The right call. Following in her grandfather's footsteps, she spent her journeyman years abroad, working in Germany and Ireland before studying art in Australia. In 2016, she founded Nitz Porzellan in Frankfurt. Today, her Sachsenhausen studio produces refined, functional ceramics: plates, cups, bowls, vases, and teapots. She uses glazes with restraint, typically reserving color for the vessel's interior, which creates a striking contrast against the unglazed white exterior. What continually captivates Nitz is porcelain's inherent complexity—it demands skill and finesse on the wheel to achieve delicate forms. The material transforms dramatically in the kiln: soft in process, utterly rigid when complete. This paradox is central to her aesthetic. Rather than erasing them, Nitz celebrates traces of the making—throwing lines become intentional design elements across her vases, bowls, and cups. Over time, these grooves have evolved into waves, each one subtly distinct, embodying both constant motion and cyclical rhythm.
