Mainz 05's renovated headquarters embodies the club's identity

A football club's administrative office serves as a hub for members and staff alike—and importantly, for visitors too. This makes it a critical touchpoint: it's where first impressions of the club are formed, while simultaneously functioning as the internal communication and information nexus. These considerations shaped every aspect of Mainz 05's renovation and restructuring. The goal was clear: create an open, collaborative workspace that fosters genuine community and connection.

The Mainz-based firm mz³ architekten ingenieure led the design and execution of the popular club's new headquarters. "Our central concept focused on elevating the reception areas and reimagining the office as a vibrant urban landscape," explains architect Tobias von Pastau. They achieved this by orchestrating a varied spatial sequence with strategically placed gathering zones—inviting spaces designed to spark conversation and encourage interaction. Whether colleagues strike up a quick chat, unwind over drinks after hours, or catch a match together, these areas feel markedly different from traditional desk workstations, striking a balance between openness and personalization.

Tradition and modernity, openness, community, and a drive for innovation—these pillars of the Nullfünfer's identity now permeate the redesigned workspace. The renovation has transformed the abstract concept of "open working culture" into tangible spatial experience. Gone are the long, dimly lit corridors that once confined movement; in their place, bright, multipurpose zones now welcome interaction. Glass partitions between office and collaboration areas maintain visual connection and reinforce an atmosphere of transparency. Where confidentiality matters most, glass doors replace partitions to preserve both openness and privacy. "What we've created is a genuinely welcoming environment," von Pastau reflects, "one that strengthens personal relationships among staff and, ultimately, elevates both job satisfaction and work quality."

The architects carefully calibrated each work zone based on anticipated traffic patterns—balancing public interaction with focused work areas. And here's what truly sets this project apart: for a football club, atmosphere extends far beyond ergonomics. Identity matters. Recognizing this, the design team ensured that every element—furniture, color palette, and graphic language—authentically reflects the Nullfünfer brand. So it's fitting that red appears throughout the spaces, creating a striking, energizing contrast against the light furnishings and crisp white walls.
