Clean lines frame an office building set between nature and an iconic bridge

Good transport connections, a pleasant working environment, and ideally, recreation space right outside your door—this winning combination became reality in western Cologne. Here, workplaces integrate seamlessly between green spaces and transit corridors. But in the Triotop commercial and landscape park, these aren't ordinary buildings. They're designs by distinguished Cologne architects, including Mronz + Schaefer, who contributed a refined L-shaped structure to this architecturally diverse landscape.

Positioned directly at the striking red Belvedere Bridge alongside the railway tracks, the grey structure radiates serene monumentality. Cubic in form, it commands its corner position at Wassermannplatz. The floor plan announces itself through the tripartite façade composition. Five massive concrete pillars, cast as single units, dominate the largest section with imposing presence. These ten-metre-high triangular columns appear to support the roof like caryatids, their solid forms shielding the glazed surfaces behind. The opposite end tells a different story: precast concrete cladding panels interrupted sparingly by a single window per floor create a more closed expression. Along the adjacent side, a measured perforated façade with full-height glazing emerges. Two contrasting façade treatments, yet unified through the building's two wings. Between them runs the entrance—a linear seam of sorts—with access zones and shared facilities, recessed and extending the building's full height. Generous 3x3-metre glass expanses emphasize this connector's dual role: linking the building's wings while dissolving the boundary between inside and out.

The corridors extend the façade's material language. Raw concrete surfaces meet exposed concrete flooring, reinforcing the building's industrial character while maintaining spatial flexibility. The upper floors accommodate two independent rental units per level, yet can be reconfigured into a single open plan. White walls amplify the brightness streaming through expansive windows, fostering an inviting work environment. Glass partitions serve dual purpose—filtering light throughout the spaces while cultivating transparency and openness. Unfussy. Direct. Honest.
